All natural phenomena take place in the field of space and time. A natural phenomenon consist a sequence of events. The description of motion of a body requires a frame of reference with respect to which the position of a body is specified in space. It may be inertial frame (which is at rest or moving with uniform velocity) or non-inertial frame (which is accelerated or rotated)

Any statement in everyday life has meaning only in a relative sense. For example the statement that train is moving means the train is moving with respect to the ground, railway track or platform. Here, the train is not moving relative to a person who is inside the train. Thus, the velocity has only a relative meaning. Hence, according to relativity all motions are relative in nature.

According to Newton there exists “Absolute Space” and without reference to any external means always ‘similar and immovable’. It provides isotropic nature for rotational invariance and homogeneity for translational invariance. Every motion (either linear or rotational) in specific frame is governed by certain laws. Mechanics deals with these laws with respect to any frame (inertial or non inertial). Force is responsible for linear acceleration while torque for angular acceleration.

The basic idea of state of rest or state of uniform motion were studied by various philosophers like Aristotle (348 – $322 \mathrm{BC})$ Galileo $(1564-1642 \mathrm{AD})$ and Newton (164 2 – 1727 AD). Any set of axes moving at uniform velocity with respect to the earth (as in a train, ship or airplane) will nearly inertial because the velocity of uniform motion does not introduce acceleration. A system of axes which are accelerated with respect to earth (such as one fixed to a spinning merry go around or to an accelerated car) is not inertial but become a non-inertial system. In non-inertial frame, the concept of fictitious (pseudo) force (like centrifugal force, coriolis force) appear to act. Hence these are not real but imaginary.
