The module introduces students to quantum mechanics (basic concepts and techniques), linking the theory to experimental observations, so that the novel ideas of quantum mechanics can be seen in action. Students will become familiar with the Schroedinger equation and its application to a range of problems in physics, and with the formalism of operators for describing physical observables. The module provides an essential set of core ideas that underpin many advanced aspects of theoretical and experimental physics. Students will learn to carry out quantitative analysis of problem in quantum mechanics using appropriate mathematical methods.
The breakdown of classical concepts and the emergence of quantum mechanics; wave-particle duality; the Schroedinger equation and its solution for different forms of one-dimensional potentials (including potential wells, steps and barriers); observables and operators, probabilities, expectation values and uncertainties; the postulates of quantum mechanics and their implications for measurements; creation and annihilation operators; the harmonic oscillator; orbital angular momentum and spin; the hydrogenic atom.
